I assumed when I deleted messages, they were gone, but I just discovered they need emptying from the trash as well.

Darren, either you're very popular or you get a lot of hate mail.

The PM system is just as shite as it was on the old board. You have to manually select each PM you want rid of. You can’t filter them by a certain user.
Then you have to remember if you have the ‘save sent copy’ ticked, and empty that too. And finally you have to manually delete the trash folder.
So that’s potentially three lots of messages. Little wonder the system fills up.
I asked before, why can’t messages be made to time out from the Inbox like after 6 months or something?? Would make life a hell of a lot easier.

Am I the only feeling inadequate that I’m nowhere near having problems with my inbox?

Another improvement would be some sort of “hard delete”, like with e-mails. That would reduce having to endlessly delete messages, like I mentioned.
I hard (shift+) delete most e-mails, only (once) click delete if I might want to read/keep it again.

You can delete an entire folder in one go? When in the private messages screen there is an option just above the messages which displays "empty folders"

True, but you have to delete each screen in succession (Inbox, Sent Items (if you have that ticked), Deleted Items. And every item from that screen you don’t need.
If the board supports it (or if it can be adjusted relatively easily to do it), I’d like to propose that messages time out of the Inbox and Deleted Items after 6 months. That means they’d just disappear, unless you move them.

I don't want my "read" (or "sent") messages to just disappear after a set amount of time.
I want to delete the ones I want to delete.

But that leads to the situation I’ve just described. Being able to hard-delete (one click) messages would be better. Just like e-mails.
In any case, I’m not sure what the server limitations are.

No, it’s not that... but it doesn’t take much imagination to see why inboxes fill up. Even technology has its limits.

Don't blame technology. Note that only very few people have posted in this thread. Only the very, very, very vocal minority is complaining. Stop sending so many PMs

This is not Grindr

Indeed.
Joking aside. The PM system is designed to send the odd message to other members or for contacting the staff.
This isn't meant to be a social media platform.
