Men’s mental health
Thoughts
#1
Given a recent interaction, and without it turning into the usual discussions, what’s your thoughts on men’s mental health issues, is it weak to seek help & should we judge those who end their life ?

Keep this civil.

No it’s not weak to seek help for anything but especially mental health issues. It’s good that there are loads of efforts being made to “normalise” this.

And we absolutely should not judge those who end their lives - that’s a key factor why mental health experts refer to those who complete suicide rather than commit (the latter making it sound like a crime).

There's no such thing as gendered mental health. It's all mental health and like physical health, everyone's is different. To say men's mental health reinforces a stigma and system that "real" men don't need mental health. That's utter bullshit.

It is never weak to seek out help, and it can save lives.

For those who think suicide is selfish, most people who complete it think the same. The catch is that they feel so horrible about themselves that no matter the stakes: family, debt, etc, the entire world would still be better off without them in it. So no, suicide is not motivated by selfishness, but by severe, often crippling, depression.

It is weak to NOT seek help when you need it.
I have a married friend (with two college age children) who in my opinion has a good marriage with all the usual issues that come with marriage after 25+ years.  He also has a macho persona with some sexual skeletons in the closet.
I told him once to agree to marriage counseling (his wife wants it), it will make his marriage happier.  He said that if he did marriage counseling then he would feel like a failure.  That is weak.

Here in Manhattan there are street ads around town with a picture of Michael Phelps and text (something like): "Therapy helped me. It can help you too." I point it out to my friend (above) every time we walk past one.

As for judging those who end their life?  It depends on the person and the circumstances.  A former lover of years ago ended his life; in my opinion he did it for the shallowest of reasons.  I'm judgmental and think he was a moron to do it.  (I'll spare you the details unless you want to hear them)
Then there's the person who is experiencing painful terminal cancer and wants you to pull the plug.  No judgment there.
It depends on the person and the circumstances.

Why do you ask this Ryan?  It is just a question of the times?  (I hope you're not considering this.)

It's not week at all to seek help, and the only way it can be seen as week is by an individual who has their own issues (of some/any sort) that they do not want to address.

Acknowledging and addressing any issues actually makes one stronger, in my opinion and a much stronger/better rounded person.
