Not only that, it requires certain things that a lot of current machines don't run

I think a bit of planned obsolescence comes to mind

Time to go ![[Image: 69W1wHL.jpg]](https://i.imgur.com/69W1wHL.jpg) ??
I swear, if I didn’t already have a PC, I would surely have a mini Mac or MacBook.

You want a Chromebook.
Seriously, I got one a year ago and it's the best machine ever. Fast, simple, no endless updates - thank fuck the guy in PC World talked me into it,

The Re-Introduction of Widgets
Also, I cannot believe they are throwing away years of muscle memory of scrolling to the left for the start button
Wow
This made me laugh though:

Something to remember when you're hiring someone in retail.

Are Chromebooks good? An off putting thing is that they are mainly online, keep things in the Cloud.
Looks like I need to save up some money to get a new laptop.
Windows 10 has until 2025 before it becomes like Windows 7

My desktop PC is on its last leg and needs a replacement. Yup, I want to get another desktop. I guess I don't need to wait until new PCs come with Windows 11 because Microsoft has said that Windows 10 will get a free upgrade to Windows 11. Problem right now is that there is a shortage of chips due to supply chain issues. No "deals" available at the moment.

Nope. I have statistical software (with installation disks) which I believe runs only on Windows machines (and mainframes). Never heard of anyone running this software on Apple, but I could inquire. Will my MS Office software download to Apple or do I have to buy it all over again? Although I'm (semi-) retired now, every company that I ever worked for used Windows machines or mainframes and I always had to be compatible from my consulting business. Never encountered Apple hardware in a business environment in my life, and still need similar access.

I believe you would need a new licensed version of Office for Apple, yes.

I have Office 2019. But I'm not interested in switching to Apple. My math/stat software and other software are for Windows and even if they exist for Apple it will be too much of a headache to switch. Plus all of my professional contacts are on Windows. I don't know if there will be compatibility issues and I'm not interested in finding out.
But thank you for the info.

I figure you should consult an expert for some advice. Unless you plan working part-time in retirement, you could maybe get your PC serviced or repaired to allow you to continue working and submitting analysis with your software.
That would tide you over until you finally retire and can make a longer-term decision.
