A Single Man (2009) with Colin Firth. Also a novel. Tom Ford’s directorial debut. A sad story about a depressed homosexual college professor, but a super stylish film.

Shiny Shrimps is brilliant. Priscilla vibe, but very French.

I also enjoyed two more dramatic filmes recently

Un Rubio

The Blonde One (Un Rubio)
Friendship evolves to intimacy as two men connect in the suburbs of Buenos Aires

DIRECTOR: Marco Berger
WRITER: Marco Berger
Argentina, 108 mins

In the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Gabriel (Alfonso Barón) moves in with colleague, Juan (Gaston Re); but while Gabriel is gay, Juan seems the epitome of straight machismo, a revolving door of beautiful women streaming out of his bedroom. Lingering looks and wandering hands lead to moments of intimacy between the two men, but what begins as something purely physical rapidly evolves into something deeper.

“Both Re and Barón underplay the roles perfectly, baring themselves physically and emotionally to make every moment of the film feel honest… Staggeringly resonant.” Gay Essential

El Principe (The Prince)

“How did you end up in here?” an older inmate asks Jaime, a young man who unexpectedly finds himself in prison.
The answer: He killed his best friend.
El Principe” is Chilean director Sebastián Muñoz’s debut feature and has its world premiere in the Critics’ Week section at the Venice Film Festival. Set in Chile in the politically volatile 1970s, the story centers on the self-involved Jaime, who becomes known as El Principe (the Prince) behind bars and develops an unlikely relationship with El Potro (the Stallion), the powerful older inmate.

The film made waves when it screened as a work in progress at festivals in Chile and San Sebastian. Muñoz, who shot the short films “Happiness” and “Good Luck” in 1996 and 1997, respectively, told Variety that his freshman feature outing revolved around the themes of desire and the need of human beings “to love and be loved.” The prison setting allowed him to explore the fact that “locked-up men only have each other, and seek affection and ‘black love’ as a form of freedom crossed with desire.”

“El Principe” stars Gaston Pauls (“Nine Queens”) and veteran Chilean actor Alfredo Castro, who appeared in Pablo Larrain’s political drama “No.” Juan Carlos Maldonado (“Las 2 Carolinas”) plays Jaime.

Just watched another (earlier) movie by Marco Berger

Plan B

less graphic than El RUbio, but still a decent watch

Bruno is dumped by his girlfriend; behind a calm, indifferent expression, his mind plans a cold, sweet vengeance. He befriends her new boyfriend Pablo, with the idea of eroding the couple, either by introducing Pablo to another woman or by seducing him himself. Thus emerges Plan B, a perilous romantic journey that calls his own sexuality into question.
