Last Sentinel, also known as Gateway 6, is a bleak movie with a depressive outlook on our future. With a cast of four, the entire film rests on their shoulders and I'm afraid they can't quite pull that off. Some good moments but mostly average performances, not helped in the least by the script. Boring at times, it never manages to become the warning about our future that the film makers set out to make.
A Disney movie for which I was very clearly not the intended target audience. Someone reviewed it as "Stand By Me In Space" and since Stand By Me is one of my favourite movies I decided to watch it. It is by no means bad but since I'm no longer in my early teens, the sentimentality didn't work for me.
This was better than I expected. quite a ew funny moments, some great fight scenes as well as Cage's over-the-top performance (aren't all his recent performances like that?). Hoult is merely OK and the rest of the cast is forgettable with the exception of Shohreh Aghdashloo, who is, as always, great in what is a bit of a stereotypical role. It's entertaining without any pretension of grandeur.
I'm not a big Russell Crowe fan, I enjoyed Gladiator and Master and Commander but that's about it. So, I was surprised when I actually enjoyed this movie and his performance in it, apart from the weird Italian/English thing. The other lead actor, Daniel Zovatto, is quite pleasing on the eye. though weirdly he looks better in this movie as a priest than in some real-life shots. The storyline is well-done and the special effects are very effective. Also entertaining but in a different way.
