Palestine
#1
Israel is committing genocide. Even global human rights organizations say it's an apartheid state. I'm seeing dead Palestinian children on my social media in Eid t-shirts. America is backing it and continues to reaffirm its strong support of Israel defending itself from kids with rocks.

What's the view across the pond?

Not across the pond yet.

In 1948 700,000 Palestinians living in what became Israel were evicted or fled out of fear from their homes and became refugees in an inexcusable act of ethnic cleansing.

My solution for Israel/West Bank/Gaza (which will never become reality because nobody wants it) is for Israel to annex the West Bank and Gaza into a single state and give all inhabitants (Jews and Palestinians alike) full equal rights.  Jews were given the right of return (because they were there 2000 years ago) so Palestinians should get likewise (because they were there 73 years ago).

I sympathize with Jews after the Holocaust and for their need to have a safe place to live (they're being discriminated against again), but the way that the UN created the state of Israel was all wrong.  It should have been done differently.  (I have no suggestion)  Partly at fault was Britain which as administers of the mandate of Palestine after WW1 was given the charge of creating a state of Palestine (which was carved out of the old Ottoman Empire).  But after WW2 Britain was too exhausted to carry out the charge so the world got this.  The UN solution was clearly not a peaceful solution.

They never asked Palestinians about it, first of all. Britain just declared Palestine a new Israeli homeland. It also gave countries a way to get rid of Jews in a more PR-friendly fashion.

There were already Jews in Palestine living with everyone else. Give the land back to Palestinians and then say everyone is equal. This whole situation is already what happens when you declare Israel a country. Give them the rest of what they want and there will be no more Palestinians left.

Britain made a royal mess of it's post-WW1 mandate with the way it chopped up its portion of the Ottoman Empire to its own political advantage (Iraq, Trans-Jordan which became Jordan and Palestine).  It also had a hand in installing the Saud family in Saudi Arabia.
(and they say the U.S. does bad stuff around the world)

In the early 20th Century Jews were a small minority in Palestine.  I forget when the scales flipped.  Was it 1948?  I forget.

During the mandate Jews were agitating for a state already.  Menachim Begin (later PM) was a terrorist during that time who helped to blow up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem.  So the British were under pressure.

It's easy to make pleas for peace when you've got the land.

The far-right in Israel wants to push all Palestinians out, past the Jordan River (including Netanyahu's son).
Finish the job.  The Final Solution.

It's a shame that Jews with a long history of being discriminated against, persecuted and exterminated will behave this way against non-Jews.

View over the pond seems to be 'oh dear look what they're doing now (shrugs)'

It is an apartheid state. Was reading this morning about an Israeli city well outside Gaza or the West Bank. Lod. The arab population (about 20%) is basically being driven out. Laws discriminate against them. The police are against them. Everything is being done to basically force them to bugger off somewhere else.

Back to Gaza..
Heard an opinion on how to stop this.
First I thought it was ridiculous but now I've seen a few people come out with it and it was in the newspaper yesterday too.

We arm the Palestinians.
We give them anti-aircraft missiles.

The thinking being its the only thing that will stop the Israelis bombing them and might create some kind of stand-off peace.

As your gun lobby says over the pond.. the best defence against someone with a gun.. is to get a gun.

To be fair Palestinians Arab neighbours have much to blame for their plight as Israel, they could have easily set up an Arab state in the West Bank and Gaza when it was under Jordanian and Egyptian rule. Not as much blame as the UK obvz with it lies to both the Arabs and the Zionists saying they could both have the land.

It will just continue in the same cycle, Hamas will launch rockets and Israel will level city blocks, nothing will change as long USA keeps spouting ‘right to defend itself’ shit. Agree with the one state solution idea, something along the lines of Northern Ireland with forced power sharing.

I doubt that in time, over the long run, the Jews ever would have accepted an Arab state in the West Bank (even though that was the original UN plan).

All of the historical religious sites for the Jews are in Jerusalem and the West Bank (which is rocky landscape not well suited for agriculture).  And yet, the original Zionists all settled in the fertile plains to the west, along the Mediterranean.  It is the far-right religious parties in Netanyahu's coalition who are now pushing to expel the Palestinians from the West Bank (which they call Judea and Samaria - that says it all).

Besides, the Palestinians wanted right of return, non-negotiable. That's the main reason (or one of the main reasons) why they didn't agree to an Arab state early on (and to this day).

Unless a one-state solution is found (highly unlikely) then Jerusalem remains an intractable headache as both sides want it for their capital (the Jews want all of it and the Palestinians want East Jerusalem).  Jerusalem should become an independent international city belonging to neither side (sort of like Singapore).

I find it ironic (and distressing) that some Jews in Israel are chanting "Death to Arabs".
It seems that some people have short memories (no matter that they were born after the Holocaust).

A lot of people and governments (eh-hem, Germany) seem to think since the Jews suffered one atrocity, Israel's actions can be overlooked. Countless others (eh-hem, my country) use Israel as a shield for good old fashioned racism.

Then there's that we're still, a millennium later, basing policy on the fucking Crusades.

Piece in the Guardian today saying that in the US attitudes are slowly shifting... with younger Americans and politicians being more more open to seeing the Palestinian side of the matter than the traditional old guard.
If this is true, it could be the turning point at last.

It's US support that largely allows Israel to behave as it does.

To put it bluntly, Israel is a failed state.  It cannot go on like this forever.  The Israelis know that which is why they want to push all Arabs out of the country including the West Bank.

The "solution" that was implemented in 1948 has failed; it was not a peaceful solution.  It's time to go back to 1948 and start over again.
