Conversion therapy
why not just ban it??
#1
Quote:A public consultation will be opened before a ban on so-called conversion therapy, the BBC understands.

The consultation will consider religious freedom and how to protect professionals, including therapists, say government sources.
Seriously, I just don’t get this. Why don’t we just ban it, end of?? Of course there are details that need to be worked out.

But what you don’t want is for some bullshit therapists and religious groups to exploit “freedom” to keep brainwashing people, just covertly.

But what if they discover a cure ?

A cure implies there’s something wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong in being gay. Glad to be gay

Submissions closed last week on a Bill before the New Zealand Parliament to ban conversion therapy. I made a written submission, and asked to appear before the Select Committee to present an oral submission in support of my written one. That gives me the chance to wipe the floor with a tory or three...

Some of the arguments against the Bill have been disingenuous arguments that suggest that a parent could be criminalised if they sought to delay a transgender child from living as their preferred gender (as in preventing teens from using puberty blockers). Given the content of the Bill, that doesn't appear to be possible. The Bill criminalises actions that occur with the intention of changing or suppressing the individual's sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, and further requires that the Attorney-General's consent is required to prosecute.

Given that data clearly shows that so-called 'conversion practices' are nothing short of medical fraud, they should be banned, and governments should have the guts to introduce legislation and let it pass through the standard process.

Transgender people fall into the "gender expression" category in most nations as far as I'm aware, so, if it is illegal to interfere with said gender expression, you could theoretically claim that keeping a minor child from doing things in that vein would apply. That is, unless, as some nations hold, certain laws don't apply to minors in the same way they would a legal adult.

Some of the official documentation dealt with those issues.
For example, Crown Law in their Bill of Rights vet report to the Attorney-General identified that while the Bill might have a limited chilling effect on legitimate expressions of opinion within families, it was substantially mitigated in a number of ways, particularly that the Bill was clearly worded to ban only practices that are intended to change or supress rather than merely confront or reject the individual's sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
