was this film originally intended for theatrical release or was it intended to be a Netflix only film?
i saw Chris Hemsworth's Extraction and it will do nothing for his film career. also when did Tom

"Extraction" had nearly 100 million views in just a few weeks - Netflix's most watched film of all time and one of the most talked about film releases of any kind this year in terms of impact and social media reaction. It has already sent his asking price up and has basically done more for him than anything he's done outside of Marvel.
He needed that success after a series of financial and critical bombs - "Men in Black International," "Bad Times at El Royale," "Ghostbusters," "The Huntsman," "Blackhat," "12 Strong," etc. Like it or not, cinema multiplexes are gone post-COVID. Very few films will be going theatrical anymore and many that are will be on demand within a few weeks as opposed to a few months.
"The Devil All The Time" was always a Netflix film, they're funding more movies now than all the major studios combined. He filmed "Spider-Man: Far from Home" until late 2018, shot this February-April 2019, then did the "Chaos Walking" reshoots, then Spidey release press, then shot "Cherry" in October-January this year. Then he was supposed to shoot "Uncharted" in March but that stalled. He's now back to filming that.

if Extraction has a 100 mil views so far I'm guessing its because he's the star. this begs a simple
question- why don't people go to see his non-Marvel films even even when they're half way decent?
for instance In the Heart of the Sea is a far better film in all aspects than Extraction.

“Very few films will be going theatrical anymore”? That’s not a credible statement, unless we believe that somehow studios are only going to make “very few” CGI-driven blockbusters. I don’t see many of those, but clearly they make money at the box office, because audiences are willing to pay for big screen and big sound.

Review wise it actually fared worse. Great book it was based on but a disappointing adaptation even though visually and design wise it's a far better looking film. His other work with Ron Howard, "Rush," fared great with critics but again there wasn't an audience. Why audience don't go to good films even when they're out? That's a whole other debate. Suffice it to say it's not an uncommon thing.

Audiences pay to go see blockbusters, trouble is they are the only ones that get people in. Even before the pandemic middle budget films are what has vanished beyond the occasional outlier hit (eg. Crazy Rich Asians). Only mega-budget blockbusters and cheap genre/arthouse films were getting people out to cinemas.
Now though? Major cinema chains are on the verge of bankruptcy, even when they open again they have to operate at a very limited capacity and movies have to be operating at about 80% capacity in order to make back they're money - legally they can't and won't be able to for some time and their real estate costs are not cheap. It's bad enough Disney is sending its $200 million "Mulan" to priced video on demand - no cinema release bar China and a few overseas countries. Production of movies is also a mess, no major films are shooting States-side and only a handful are back up overseas.
That's why all these deals are being made now for streaming releases and or premium streaming releases. Cinema isn't dead, but it's glory days are over.

Extraction having a 100 mil views so far means nothing in the long run. Netflix counts as a "view"
if someone were to view it for as little as 5 secs.

Actually it's at least two minutes - they quantified that about a year back, before then was better as it was a minimum of 50-60% of a film or episode.
