from the (spit) Mail...

BBC slammed over Britain's EUROVISION failure: Trade minister Liz Truss says the broadcaster should be stripped of power to choose the UK entry after James Newman finishes LAST

Now I never thought I'd agree with the Mail, this government or especially the Truss woman...
but she may have a point.

Whoever at the Beeb chooses our entry is a moron. For years.
Even when they gave us a selection programme to vote in... all the entrants were shit.

See my comment above about budget for the show - when you're only spending £40k/broadcast hour spending anything on the contestant is a huge cost. Ant-n-dec will drop £200k on a 5 min segment for Takeaway without blinking but that's because that show has a budget of £1m/hour.

Until the show is considered a big thing by the beeb it's not going to get the production resources, budget or people to actually pull in an act of the scale and quality this event needs. When ALW was involved he brought in his production company and an actively involved record label who all pumped resources into the tune because they had ways to monetise it afterwards. When Blue did it again the record label chipped in because it was essentially an advertisement for the band that sold a few million quid in albums and tour tickets afterwards. When we pick a nobody or an ex-celeb performer there's literally no one involved in the process with a long term view or a decent budget to throw around.

You're not telling me our guy (I genuinely have already forgotten his name) got paid for that performance.
He should be paying us.
He should pay my licence fee.

Having said that, I just watched the German song and fuck me how did that even get 3 points?  Huh

I agree I've just watched it again on Youtube, and apart from the chorus, he does struggle!

I'm not really 'down wiv da kidz' these days. Is he actually famous/known then ?

All I've seen online is that he wrote a past entry for Ireland which didn't even get past the selection stage and his brother is a singer.

EBU Satisfied that Måneskin did NOT use drugs at the Eurovision Song Contest.

I didn't watch his Eurovision performance but it can't have been as bad as Olly Alexander's from the other week with Elton John.

There’s a hot guy in the official video for the Maltese entry

He is hot!! His name is Kyle Curmi

The papers will all say its cos everyone hates us after Brexit, ignoring the fact that the song is shite and eye-candy he ain't

So true. We seem to make a habit of picking poor songs.

There's an interesting but inevitably inconclusive discussion on More or Less (start at 8:47.)

Fun fact: The UK's favourite song for the last six contests has been Lithuania's. It's simular for Ireland and Norway.

Fun fact: Songs in a minor key do better than those in a major key. The whole too ten was made up of songs in a minor key. Three of the bottom four were in a major key. (No need to wonder about our song.)

Bill Bailey has offered to do next years UK song.

He said he'd offered a couple of years ago to do somekind of madcap wacky song sending up how the British are seen overseas with some eco sendup stuff in there too. With fiddles and all the bells and whistles.
The BBC told him they didn't want to go down that route. They wanted serious music entries.

As Bill says "Look how thats turning out for them"

No pianos were harmed in the making of that performance.
