For the first time you will be asked in the Census if you are a bummerboy. Although it is optional to fill that bit in.
Which of the following best describes your sexual orientation?
This question is voluntary
[ ] Straight or Heterosexual
[ ] Gay or Lesbian
[ ] Bisexual
[ ] Other sexual orientation
(Write in sexual orientation)
and also one for the JK Rowling fans..
"Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?"

You know there is such a thing as as the Census Coverage Survey, which is a bit like a repeat Census - to make sure the data averages out correctly. I can just imagine asking that question on the doorstep (I did both lots 10 years ago).
But I am very much on the same page as JK and Germaine Greer. It demeans women’s experiences to suggest gender is something that can be “assigned” away (it’s not something like a contract, it’s something you experience and live through).
Besides which, if you hear the experiences of many trans people, they would suggest they’re much closer to non-binary. For instance, they consider themselves xxxx gender, they were born with body parts of the “wrong gender”, but have no need or wish to change them, that makes them non-binary in my view.
You can also start your Census right now - if you visit census.gov.uk, and request an access code.

I’ve just read it’s been put back until 2022 due to the pandemic. I guess my ‘phase’ can last another year before I have to answer that question then lol

I had to check, in the Netherlands this type of census was last conducted in 1971. It seems the Dutch now use a register-based census. It's cheaper, you know

Spare a thought for the Census Collectors and Survey interviewers. These guys are working on the minimum wage, working long hours and can only claim petrol money.
But they will be really glad if you agree to do an interview.

Why would a nation not conduct a census at all?

Are they really needed these days ?
The amount of data already held about us all.. they could just bring it all together.
Or ask the Russians.

Do they include the demographics, like this?? Do they know if you’ve got central heating, for instance?? Or how many languages you speak??

I guess I asked because, in the US, the census count actually matters since it is used for bureaucratic things like how much money is allocated to states for different things, at least the last time I checked.

Plus, for distribution of Congressional seats.

Plus, for distribution of Congressional seats. It used to be the same over here too. But a lot of the guidelines are broken, or out of use. There doesn’t seem to be much duty on councils to actually make use of Census data, in practice. Mainly due to funding cuts.
They could’ve partially worked out your sexuality last time too. There was an option to say if you had a civil partnership (which were only for gays back then). Although that’s not going to be very representative.

I can imagine that a lot of right wing American politicians would love to ignore the census like that, but there's no legal way in the US to get around it except attempting to ignore information by not putting it into the set of questions for the census. It's part of US law that a census must be taken with no option not to do it totally, though.
