Decided to give All4 a go. I’m watching the first three episodes this week, and the rest next week. Makes you realise though, 40 years ago no-one had a clue about AIDS. Not a clue.
They thought it was a gay-only disease - and spread from animals. They even used the Public Health Act (used for Coronavirus today) to lock gay AIDS patients in hospitals.
OMG, it’s so sad. Especially Eps. 3. You’ll definitely cry. Never thought it’d be that emotional.

Not as far in. Ooh, er missus.
The end was very sad, though. Ritchie’s mum was a b*tch not phoning Jill until the day after he died. And lying about leaving him alone at the end. There was no call for that. You know they could’ve got on, it would just have taken time.
And poor old Jill. She must’ve carried the weight of the world on her shoulders. To see so many of her mates die within a few years, must be incredibly sad.

Judging by Insta, everyone was in bits at some point or other. But they all agree it was very good. Roll on a BAFTA award. Really exceeded expectations.
In fact, when you look at everything Russell T Davies has produced or written, you can’t disagree but he is about the only mainstream screenwriter who writes positively about gay people. Consistently.
I’m happy to be proved wrong, but I don’t think there are that many others.

Watched them all now and thought it was brilliant. It really captured the naivety and prejudice of the era and also the fun, smiles and of course utter tragedy all at the same time. Steve McQueen's Small Axe and It's a Sin - these both have to clean up at the TV awards. RTD has nailed it with this.

Fully agreed. Meantime, it’s depressing that most of the (right-leaning) media reviews concentrate more on the sex scenes than the plot.
I don’t think I’ve felt as strongly for the characters and what they went through for a long time. I’d love to read some more experiences about people that went through that period, witnessed what their mates, family were going through, that sort of thing.

No surprise about the right-wing media I suppose, unfortunately so.
Yes I also felt a strong connection with the characters - they were so happy, nice and easy to like and that's what really pulled me in. It was all very positive and human even when the tragedy unfolds.

Too late.

Couldn't bring myself to binge, so doing single episodes over last few days and finished this evening.
Loved it, beautiful, haunting and heart-breaking. Am very very very (insert a few thousand more verys) at someone from the final episode, and all the more powerful because of that.

Spoiler >> Ritchie's mother is a cunt and I want to watch her die horrifically and spit and piss on her while she does.

I was reading this at work tonight, and my jaw actually dropped...
SHOW SPOILER CONTENT
Spoiler >> HIV diagnosis at 16 was like 'a wake-up call'.
Basically the guy who plays Ritchie’s bf, Donald Bassett, he also contracted HIV just before he turned 17. It was his first ever time too.
I don’t know what shocked me more - that, or life imitating art. Of course it’s possible to get HIV even if it’s your first time, but incredibly bad luck.
It’s also important to be positive about pos people, not treat them as outcasts. Undetectable is undetectable.

Still can’t get over this... If I was sexually active right now, I would be taking a lot more care of myself. And others.
