Wentworth Miller only wants to play gay roles
#1
Quote:Prison Break star Wentworth Miller has told fans he won’t be taking part in any future seasons of the show because he’s done playing straight men.

The actor appeared in all four seasons from 2006 to 2009, as well as the 2017 revival, as Michael Scofield, who deliberately sends himself to prison to break out his elder brother Lincoln Burrows.

A sixth season of Prison Break is rumoured to be in the works, but it’ll have to go ahead without its lead character after Miller confirmed he’s quit for good.

Miller, who is gay, said his decision was partly linked to the abuse he gets from homophobic viewers, who are presumably unhappy to learn he’s not as straight as his character is.

How do you feel about this???
Personally, I think it's a weird decision. Isn't the whole point of acting becoming someone you're not??

I get the idea of representation and when the point of the movie or show is to do with the sexual orientation of a character it would be different.
However, if this were to become the norm, Eric Stonestreet couldn't have played Mitch in Modern Family and Neil Patrick Harris couldn't have played Barney in HIMYT.
This is my sig, it's the only one of its kind

It's approaching a breaking point in this debate. Since the advent of film and in some ways most live theater, gay men, who've always gravitated to it, have had to play straight just to get work. Then in the last few decades, it became a prestige thing for straight men to play gay. There are also arguments for bankability, which has always been a lame way of saying we don't want to build up any members of the actual community portrayed.

Now, we have awareness of gay actors, we have out gay actors, but we keep casting straight men in gay roles to beef up their bonafides and build their careers instead of building up and casting gay actors to do it. The same is done for all minorities. Trans, Black, Asian, etc. We always have straight white men do it first for decades because WHITE AUDIENCES WON'T SEE THEM IF WE CAST THEM AS THE LEAD OH NO.

Also, can't they just make Wentworth's character gay? We'd all tune in for that.

Actors act.

Sigourney Weaver is not a space trucker, Ian McKellan was not actually a wizard, Henry Cavill is not an alien with superhuman powers, Tom Cruise wasn't actually a wheelchair user, Felicty Huffman isn't a transwoman and Timothee Chalamet isn't a homosexual.

This woker-than-thou bullshit that people stop actually acting and only play the roles that are very specifically tailored to them is an utter nonsense and shows just how brain-dead a certain section of society has become.

If Miller is doing it solely as an attempt to stem abuse he gets from homophobic idiots then fine, I get that, it's fucking dumb, but I get it. It's probably more an attempt to generate a little heat as, lets be honest, he's hardly been troubling casting agents outside of those hiring for must-miss television guest spots.
