Bye bye Boris
Set to resign today

She's been in government for many years. Its not like we don't know she's shit.

She won't last long I don't think. Boris was shit but had his 'charisma' (apparently) to keep him popular.

Truss is just shit.

It's the only fair way to rank Tory Prime Ministers.

So Liz Truss is now the fourth PM since Britain voted for Brexit six years ago.  Is Britain even governable?  (Although I have to admit, the vicious and toxic politics in Britain is competitive with what's happening in the U.S. these days. which has me wondering if the U.S. will soon be ungovernable.)

I have a technical question about the transition to a new PM.
Today Truss will see the Queen (at Balmoral Castle) to receive her "orders" (sorry, don't know the proper name of the ceremony).  The Queen's advanced age (and short life expectancy) has me wondering.  When King George VI died a good amount of time (a year?) passed before Elizabeth's coronation.  If a new PM is chosen during that interim who does he/she go to see to receive the "orders"?  Does the Crown Prince (Charles in this case) step in to perform all of the sovereign's duties until his coronation?

Royal hereditary titles pass instantly (hence "the king is dead, long live the king") so the second Liz checks out Charles gets to become the #1 Royal and therefore can do the job.

An interesting point I learned today is that between the time the outgoing pm tenders his/her resignation and the new pm kisses the monarchs hand, the monarch is on charge. She should have let rip in that interim and given us unlimited bank holidays, pay doctors and nurses a decent wage and sent non entities like Jordan to the tower!

The New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman had an interesting take on the situation:

"In the end, one could say the contest to become the new leader of the Conservative Party and Britain's next prime minister partly came down to the pussy bow vs. Prada."  LOL

The other day, I heard the election of Liz Truss to Number 10 is "the choice of racism over sexism and misogyny".

Has Rishi Sunak been accused of sexism?
(Misogyny, "hatred of women", is a grossly overused and misused word to the point of no longer having any meaning.  I always take misogyny accusations with a grain of salt.)

A d-list former glamour model. She has her fans as well as her knockers!

I’d add Gemma Collins and Rylan to that list off the top of my head

I know you do.  I always ignore it because it's not true.  I have great respect for women (unlike the likes of Gloria Steinem).

Yep. You wouldn't think it was possible to get a PM worse than Boris but Truss seems to have managed it, and she's not even started yet!
Why do I get the impression (and I’m not looking at anyone here, even though their posts illustrate the point I’m making), that this is all about the wokesters frontloading their POV’s??

Liz Truss is a straight, white woman. She is not known to have any ‘protected characteristics’, being a woman only counts marginally in her favour. Therefore she counts as the female equivalent of “gammon”, therefore it’s open season to make as many offensive or bullshit comments as they like.

If she was black, lesbian, disabled or (especially) trans, I very strongly doubt that people would be making these remarks, even if she was still as right-wing.

I’ve seen hundreds of pages of comments, and if it was directed at someone with protected characteristics, then all the wokesters would be “caused great offence”, and demand resignations.

I’m actually comfortable with the idea that people may dislike Truss, hate her, or her policies. But the amount of written bile I’ve seen is verging on Putinesque, or Trumpian. Like a ‘two minute hate’. Big brother would be very pleased.

She wasn’t appointed, she was elected even if only 160,000 or so were allowed to vote
Isn’t that a good argument to have a written constitution in place?? At least then no-one could say “we didn’t know who we were going to get”…

They said that in 1974, which was more to do with the ability of unions to derail government policies. That might even be the case this winter too, we’ll see.

I don’t think Britain is a basket case, the US is probably more so, due to the dysfunctional courts system, and the Second Amendment and the recent decisions on abortion. Justice Thomas conveniently forgetting that one of “right to privacy decisions” he favours abolishing also allowed for inter-racial marriage.

This is basically what is already happening. A “shadow Regency”, if you like. All the Queen still feels immense guilt and shame (through her folks) about what happened almost 90 years ago.

Abdication is not the same as retirement, but the reverse is also true. There is no shame in hanging up your boots if you’ve done your duty many times over.

No, read it again. I’m saying that people would stall their hateful posts if she was one of those things. She isn’t, so they aren’t. Nothing to do with what I think.

She is seen as the equivalent of Nigel Farage, so people treat her with the same level of contempt as Nigel Farage (or Tommy Robinson, take your pick).

We’re talking about thousands of pages of written posts and memes. If there was a scintilla of violence, they would be hate posts. But the hate is there alright, just beneath the surface.

I’ve never seen so much hate about a politician online before. Never seen so many people prepared to put it in writing.

I read today (in an opinion article) that she would be best compared to Enoch Powell.

God that was like sitting through a brain storming session at the Daily Mail. Throw enough shitty arguments and buzzwords about to see what sticks.

Help

Don't worry I'm sure some rich Islington journalist will very soon be able to tell you why people who have judged Liz Truss merely on her past record are the worst lefty liberal wokies in the world.

Even though there is virtually no similarity. She shares neither his extremist views nor his rock solid integrity and intellectual depth.

Ah yes of course you're completely right Jumbler - one only has to look at Diane Abbot to see that if one is a black woman in politics at a much lower level than actual prime minister then they don't get any abusive remarks or insults whatsoever. My goodness what a bright and well informed political opinion you have of the world; one we should all aspire to. [/joe lycett]
